A migraine headache can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. When you're talking about moderate to severe headaches, migraine is the most common. Tension headaches are experienced more often, but are generally less severe in intensity.

In addition to the headache pain, a migraine episode can include other symptoms that can appear before, during, or after the headache. Approximately 60% of all migraine sufferers will experience symptoms preceding the onset of headache. Auras are fairly common and usually appear from 10 minutes to 30 minutes before the head pain begins. Auras can consist of visual, auditory, or olfactory disturbances. In other words, migraineurs may have symptoms preceding the headache that can include photophobia (light sensitivity), bright zigzagging flashes of light, hallucinations, blinds spots, sensitivity to loud noises, and increased sensitivity to odors.

Other symptoms that accompany auras can include upper extremity or facial numbness or tingling, speech difficulties, irritability, mood changes, loss of facial color, cold hands, diarrhea, loss of energy, and many others. When a person experiences these types of symptoms it can alert them to an impending migraine attack. This is often beneficial because treatment can get started early and a full-blown attack may be avoided.

Classic migraine headaches include an intense pounding pain that occurs on one side of the head, but will be experienced on both sides about one third of the time. With one-sided migraines they will usually switch sides from headache to headache. In other words, the pounding head pain will appear on the left side for one or two episodes and then switch to the right side for one or two episodes. If the pain is always felt on the same side it could indicate a brain tumor or other serious disorder. Whenever moderate to severe headaches appear continuously on the same side it could be due to a serious health problem and professional medical advice should be sought.

Performing strenuous activities or exercises such as jogging or climbing stairs will usually cause the pain to increase. For this reason, vigorous activities should be avoided during a migraine attack. However, exercising on a regular basis at other times can help reduce the frequency and intensity of migraines.

About three out of every four migraine attacks are experienced by females and are often associated with their menstrual cycle. With most migraine sufferers the pain is usually first experienced between the age of puberty and young adulthood. The episodes will normally decrease at the age of 50 or 55.

Migraine attacks usually occur as much as once or twice a week or as little as once every several months or longer. However, they can occasionally become chronic, meaning they will appear more than half the days of the month.

Treatment for many people consists of painkillers, but there are many effective natural treatment methods that can relieve or prevent migraine pain. In fact, many natural methods can often be more effective than painkillers, especially over the long term.
