A runner's headache problem some say distance runners get them. I can only give you my personal experience. I am a person who has had headaches everyday of my life since I suffered a concussion when I was nineteen years old. It didn't matter if I was running or not. Number two running the exercise headache of the act, didn't bring it on.

I did experience if I was fixing to go on a run and I already had a headache. I would be sure and take my pain medication before the run, because if I didn't my headache would get worse throughout the course of the run. Other than that, I've actually experienced no form of running brought on the headache. Meaning no speed work, no distance, no climate and nothing I ate made any difference.

Though when going to some races when talking to some other runner's sometimes one of them said they have experienced their encounters of some runs bringing a sudden headache on. This was less than five people over twenty years or more.

Headaches and the common cold has been a problem with man since the beginning of time. In prehistoric times they drilled a hole in the skull to let the evil spirits out! I wouldn't try that one! A migraine headache is also known as a sick headache that usually comes on in periodic attacks. Some suffer from sinus headaches. I had the sinus surgery one time. That didn't help headaches in my case.

Fatigue headaches are said to come from overwork. Of course some sleep and rest should take of that. Another type of headache that comes on to some people is called a hunger headache. These can often be cured by simply eating just a few crackers or some tea or even coffee. However, in some people they have become so dependent on their fix of caffeine that when they don't get their daily intake of the lack of caffeine, actually brings a headache on. This is a vicious cycle that is hard to break. But, with strong will power this cycle can be broken over a few months by keeping a close eye on using less and less intake of caffeine in colas and coffee.

My primary experience has been with muscle tension headaches. At least that is what I was diagnosed. Plus secondary of a combination of many of the others. Eye strain can bring on a headache. Even if the prescription of your glasses may have gotten too weak for you can bring on a headache. Load noise can bring on headaches to some as well as anxiety and blood pressure just to name a few. I almost forgot one...cluster headaches, this is one to not over look as this could be the early signs of a tumor.

Believe it or not there are some people who claim to never have had, not one headache in their entire lives! To people who have never had one, they can't possibly understand what one is like? Can you imagine having a treating doctor who never has and your dependent on him to prescribe you your medications!

In closing we should always be on the lookout because headaches can be the symptoms of a disease. Headaches can be the warnings of meningitis, malaria, smallpox and typhoid. The headache is saying hey! There is something wrong here! A few more warning signs of headaches can also be a signs of high blood pressure and kidney disease. There are ship loads of information if your want to dig even deeper at the National Headache Foundation.

Read How To Deal With Headaches Behind The Eyes extra

Pain behind the eyes may be a symptom of different types of headaches and even other health problems. Most commonly people complain to have an extreme one-sided headache especially involving the area around or behind one eye. This is a typical description of cluster headache. Other symptoms associated with cluster headache are eye redness or tearing, smaller pupil on the affected side of the face and stuffy, runny nose.

Cluster headaches are very severe and last from 25 minutes to a couple of hours. They may recur several times a day for up to 8 weeks and than disappear for a few months or even years.

One of the most effective and safest treatments for cluster headaches is oxygen mask that raises levels of oxygen in the blood and as a result relaxes constricted blood vessels. If that does not help injections of sumatriphan and dihydroergotamine may provide relief from the headache behind the eyes.

Over-the-counter painkillers are not a good alternative for relieving pain as headaches often goes away before the pill starts working.

Both cluster headaches and migraines are considered vascular headaches and are linked to abnormal function of brain's blood vessels due to hormonal chemical change in the brain. Since those two types of headaches are closely linked together, during migraines, headache may start in the area surrounding one or both eyes.

Migraine headache often begins with visual disturbance called "aura" (a person is seeing zigzag lines or flashing lights or have blurred vision). Later migraine is often accompanied with such symptoms as vomiting, fatigue, nausea, sensitivity to lights and loud sounds.

People suffering from cluster or migraine headaches should avoid use of alcohol and tobacco, certain foods, especially the ones containing nitrates (food coloring, processed meats, preservatives), bright and glaring light, stress and certain medications that lead to hormonal changes (oral contraceptives, estrogens).

Sometimes infection of the frontal sinuses can lead to a dull, throbbing pain between or behind the eyes. It tends to get worse in the mornings and is accompanied with frequent tearing, congestion, runny nose, fever and sensitivity to light. Diving in dirty water, airborne allergies, cold or flu may cause sinus headache.

To eliminate pain behind the eyes, you should reduce inflammation and sinus swelling. Inhaling steam and applying heat over affected area combined with Vitamin C and zinc intake will facilitate the mucus drainage and help to boost immune mechanism to reduce sinus headache.

Other factors that can be the main reason for the headaches behind the eyes are eyestrain and glaucoma. Eyestrain occurs if the eyes are forced to focus on a close object (a newspaper, computer screen) for a long period of time, without focusing periodically at distant objects or due to uncorrected vision problems.

Glaucoma is caused by increased pressure within the eyeball that requires immediate medical attention as it may lead to optic nerve damage and loss of sight. Nowadays glaucoma may be treated by prescription drugs or surgery.

Go through Headache Prevention - Headache Relief Remedies That Work a lot more

Headache

There are many remedies that are claimed to relieve various types of headaches. Some work and some don't. But in my clinical experience those listed below are remedies that I have found to be generally useful.

Of course there are no remedies which work for everyone all of the time. One of the reasons is that headaches can have complex multiple causes. e.g. Stress will cause neck muscle tension and upset your stomach causing nausea. You may need to treat both of these causes in order to relieve your headache.

Migraine. Wood Betony and Feverfew are the herbs of choice plus magnesium to relax tense muscles. Migraines are complex and are very individual. That is you need to understand there pattern of onset. Once you identify this pattern you can take steps to head off the next attack before it starts. E.g. one client always knew she would have a migraine by the weekend if she was very busy, became stressed and missed some meals during the week.

Headache with nausea, ginger, peppermint tea plus fruit juice in case that low blood sugar is contributing.

Sinus headache: Albezia Baical Skullcap for allergy, golden rod and golden seal as specifics, and Echinacea for immune support. Essential oils, pine and aniseed as a vapour inhalant for the sinus infection. PS always be careful of the steam as it can easily burn.

Stress Headache. Magnesium, Calcium, Chamomile tea, Lemon balm, Valerian, stress management, and relaxation techniques such as Qigong, Tai Chi, Yoga and Meditation.

Food allergy related headache.

Remove all suspected foods. e.g. dairy, wheat, strong cheese, chocolate, eggs and strawberries. Nitrates, Nitrites and MSG call cause headaches in susceptible individuals.

Plus suspect chemicals e.g. gasoline, perfume, and kitchen and laundry cleaners. Shampoos and some toiletries can also cause headaches.

It is advisable to seek out safe alternatives, go to your local health food shop for advice.

Food Remedies

Whilst it is well known that some foods cause headaches, some also can help. Cinnamon where low blood sugar. Strangely while chocolate can aggravate some migraine, both chocolate and coffee can relieve some headaches as they cause vasodilation which opens up arteries to the head which are constricting. I personally found this combination most useful to relieve headaches from the heat of the tropical sun.

Don't forget water, if you are dehydrated you are highly likely to get a headache

Topical applications.

Peppermint oil, oil of wintergreen and Tiger balm can all be helpful when rubbed on the temples.

Hot packs to reduce muscle spasm and cold packs to cool and relax forehead pain.

Acupressure and Acupuncture

Acu points and trigger point treatments can offer significant pain relief. Self treatment of these points is most useful at the onset of the headache.

Magnets

Magnet therapy can work wonders for pain. Its best to place the magnets just on the brain side of the pain. The theory is that it works on the gate theory of blocking pain in a similar way to Acupuncture.

Herbal Headache and Migraine Remedies

Headache Cures

So many people are looking for alternatives to drugs when it comes to treating their headaches. Herbal headache remedies can be quite effective if the right ones are chosen! In low doses, many herbs can help stop a headache if the headache is mild. Some are great for daily use to prevent headaches, while others can sooth the upset stomach.

Keep in mind, that a little goes a long way and many herbs used for pain and mood can interact with prescription drugs. Another thing to keep in mind that the FDA does not standardize herbal preparations in the US (as of yet). One way to insure your quality of herbs is to get them from a company that produces only organics and maintains standards.

Ginger

Ginger can be an excellent herbal remedy for that "wonderful" symptom of nausea. Proven throughout the years, ginger in many forms can help settle the stomach. Many people prefer to use ginger teas but keep in mind the earlier you can get the tea into you, the better off you will be. It is very difficult to swallow anything if full blown nausea and vomiting is going on!

It has these anti-nausea effects because it speeds digestion and increases saliva production. Also, it has some anti-inflammatory properties. If taken in large quantities it causes diaphoresis (excessive sweating). In centuries past ginger was used this way to break a fever by causing sweating.

Feverfew
Feverfew is well known to migraineurs as an herb headache preventative. It has gentle anti-inflammatory properties which may stop part of the migraine from progressing. Because of this it is also used for arthritis.Feverfew can take up to 3 months to be effective in migraine. Too many times, people will tell me the herb was not effective and come to find out, they took it for only two or three weeks.

Feverfew should NOT be taken if you are pregnant as it runs the risk of causing bleeding.

Children and adolescents tend to respond faster and better to feverfew than adults do.

Butterbur
Gaining attention recently as one of the herbal headache remedies, Butterbur is showing promise in this area. Like feverfew, clinical trials have been conducted and have shown up to a 50% reduction in headaches in those taking Butterbur.

Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne is available in a nasal spray to treat headache. YUK you say! Spray this up my nose? Well, true it hasn't been proven yet but there is a method to the madness! Capsician is the key ingredient here and when sprayed up the nose it hits a nerve plexus at the back. This nerve "talks" to the trigeminal nerve which is responsible for migraine.

Unfortunately, the effect wears off soon which is why it hasn't been too successful..oh that and the possible burning sensation!

Ginko
I am mentioning ginko because there is some "buzz" in the headache community about this herb. Ginko has been promoted for memory with the idea it increases blood flow to the brain. While it doesn't affect blood vessels, it DOES thin the blood which could improve flow.

That's all well and good, but it has no effect on headaches or migraines. In fact if you take it with feverfew and aspirin you could run the risk of microscopic hemorrhages in the brain. So it is best to leave this one alone when it comes to headache treatment.

Herbs for Sleep and Anxiety
One of the problems many headache sufferers complain of is sleep problems. Use of Valarian and Camomille before bed has been shown to have some relaxing properties. Regular exercise before bed can also help to calm the nerves, and who knows? Maybe a cup of Valarian tea will help! Read more about sleep and headaches.

Many herbal supplements are very effective for migraine prevention and other types of headache. Remember to ask your practitioner first before combining these items with any prescription medications that you are taking for migraine.

Do you take vitamins? New information shows that for some people, the addition of Vitamin B-2 can ease or even eliminate migraines.

Other non-prescription remedies include magnesium, Coenzyme Q10, and the herbs feverfew and butterbur. Since every body is different, what works for one may not work for another, but since migraines are so debilitating, giving these safe and natural remedies a try seems like a good idea.

And here's something else well worth trying: A water filter.

My Mother suffered from migraines most of her life, and often lost days at a time to the pain - and the after-effects of the medications she took to ease the pain. Her doctors didn't offer any solutions except those heavy-duty pain killers that left her too groggy to function.

Then she moved to Arizona for the winter to get my Grandmother out of the cold weather. And since the water in Arizona wasn't so good, they installed a water filter in the house. And the migraines stopped almost immediately.

When she came back home for the summer, the headaches started again, so they installed another water filter and they went away.

This was a standard under-the-sink installation which at that time cost about $29. I suppose they're $129 now, but worth it even if you don't suffer from migraines. It's good to get the contaminates out of your water as a preventative health measure. The filter she used was the charcoal one - "for taste and odor" is what it says on the label.

We have no idea what was in the water to cause the migraines, because it happened everywhere. City water both in Arizona and Washington and spring water in Idaho all gave her migraines if they weren't filtered. Perhaps it was really the charcoal - and filtering the water through it gave her body a nutrient that it needed to prevent the pain. It didn't matter - what mattered was that she no longer suffered from those terrible headaches.

She always knew when it was time to change the filter, because she'd start to feel the onset of a headache.

Of course we wished we'd known sooner, but I'll always be thankful for that accidental discovery.

If you have migraines, try these simple remedies. You might even be able to toss your pain pills!

How Can We Avoid Triggering of Migraine/Headache?

Headache Cures

Headache Cures

Migraine is a type of primary headache. It is an unbearable condition characterized by moderate to severe nausea. The typical migraine headache is one-sided pain (affecting one-half of the head) and lasting from 4 to 27 hours. It has many symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia, phonophobia and it generally aggravated by routine activity.

It is a common neurological disorder in the world. It is afflicting more people than diabetes, epilepsy and asthma combined. It is about 3 times more common in women than in men.

Types of Migraine:

Migraine is classified according to the symptoms they produce. The two most common types are migraine with aura (unusual visual) and migraine without aura.

Prevention:

Migraine management is really an important part of day-to-day life. There are many ways to prevent Migraine from usual life. Some of them are as follow:

1. Taking preventive medicine & nutritional supplements

Preventive therapy aims to reduce the duration, painfulness, frequency etc. In addition, it aims to avoid medication overuse headache (MOH) otherwise known as rebound headache.

Sometimes the impact of my headaches would be so much so that I'd literally come home from work, grab a hot washcloth and lay it over my head, then proceed to bed...another night of doing nothing but tending to my headache, another night lost

2. Migraine surgery

It is mainly useful for patients who suffer attacks that are more frequent and in those who have not had an adequate response to prophylactic medications. Main advantage of this surgery is that we can make a definite diagnosis before the surgery is undertaken. Hence, we can expect an outstanding result of surgery after the diagnosis. This makes a permanent pain relief as well as relief from the associated symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, light & sound sensitivity.

3. Lifestyle alterations

Lifestyle plays a very big role in migraine management. A minute alteration on our lifestyle may leads to a huge difference in migraine prevention such as increased exercise, change in sleep pattern etc.

It is always good to identify and avoid triggering factors that cause headache. Moderation in take of caffeine and alcoholic stuffs will help you to gain some control on it. Consistency in food and sleep may help as well. However, general dietary is not advisable for migraine management. Such dietary may trigger migraine. It is just a matter of understanding your own body and treat according to it.

Painless Headaches - If Your Head Doesn't Ache, is it a Headache?

Headache

Imagine discovering that you were suffering from a headache, though you were not experiencing any headache pain? Sometimes, people who are experience odd unexplained symptoms are found to be afflicted with what is often called a silent migraine.

Silent migraines are known by other names such as migraine auras without headache, ocular migraines or painless migraines.

The signs of this usual headache are similar to those a person may experience at the start of a typical migraine, but they are never joined by headache pain.

A silent migraine may be accompanied by visual migraine symptoms, such as seeing flashing lights off to one side, feeling dizzy or experiencing tingling or numbness in their fingers. Sometimes people even have trouble talking, or suffer pain in odd places on their faces.

These unusual symptoms are more often found in older women rather then young, and they are even rarer in men.

The main problem with silent migraines is that these symptoms can be incorrectly attributed to other ailments. Without the symptom of headache pain, it is difficult for many health care providers to identify headache as the source of the difficulty.

As an example, many symptoms experienced with painless migraines are similar to typical stroke indicators. Patients have been misdiagnosed because doctors thought the patient suffered a minor stroke. These symptoms can also be attributed to seizures or serious vision problems. It is no surprise, given the symptoms, that doctors look first to these more serious conditions.

You should allow your doctor to do whatever tests they feel are necessary to eliminate more serious health issues. They may order a CT scan, an MRI, blood tests and possibly an eye examination. Once these tests are completed, if everything comes back negative it is time to point your health care provider in a different direction.

The first step in working with your health care provider to identify silent migraines as the cause of your symptoms is to explain your family history. Migraine sufferers typically have immediate family members who also suffer with migraine headaches.

Carefully describe your symptoms to your doctor, and show the similarity to those associated with migraines. If you have had multiple episodes , that should also go a long way to convincing them that you are indeed suffering from a painless migraine.

Treatment of silent migraines is generally the same as for regular migraines. The same medications are used, including medications used to try to prevent a migraine from coming once the aura has begun. Injections and nasal sprays are better forms of medication because they provide relief more quickly.

Understand Cluster Headache extra

It is inevitable that we sometimes suffer from headaches due to stress, hormones and anxiety. But there is one type of headache that is rare and very painful. This type of headache is called cluster headache and it can start suddenly without any previous symptoms. The pain you will experience will usually start behind one eye but the whole side of your face will become red and swollen.

Cluster headaches are quite frightening to both the person who is suffering and his family because it can occur without even the slightest provocation. You should note though that a cluster headache generally lasts for a few minutes in most cases although some people may suffer from cluster headaches for several hours in severe cases. There is a pattern you should expect when you experience having cluster headaches because it usually occurs on the same time of the day for several weeks. Then the headaches can stop altogether but it can come back after several months.

Right now, there is no sufficient proof that cluster headaches are in any way associated with any other types of diseases. Many believe the cluster headaches are hereditary but poor lifestyle habits can also cause the cluster headaches in some cases. Likewise, it is also observed that heavy smoking, inconsistent sleeping pattern and strong medications can worsen the symptoms of cluster headaches.

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish cluster headaches from other types of headaches because many of the symptoms are similar. But giving an accurate description of the symptoms you are experiencing to your doctor can help him make the correct diagnosis. Recording the pattern of your headaches is very important because cluster headaches occur with a constant pattern everyday. Letting your family members and relatives have a talk with the doctor about your behavior when headaches occur is also essential to be able to distinguish the type of headache you are experiencing.

In addition, some people are embarrassed about some of the actions they do when cluster headaches occur because they sometimes hit their head against the wall or the furniture to relieve the pain. These actions are actually quite common to people who suffers from cluster headaches because the pain they feel is very acute and severe. You should not hide these facts from your doctor so that he will be able to give you the correct medication through judging the severity of your headaches.

If you are diagnosed with cluster headaches, you should expect to take two medicines. One medicine is to reduce the number of headaches you experience during the cluster period and the other medicine is used to relieve the symptoms of the cluster headache. You should note though that medications that are ingested usually take a long time to work. For this reason, your doctor will most likely prescribe a medicine that can be inhaled or injected into the body for the medications to work immediately. Cluster headaches are one of the most painful headaches you will ever experience but with the right treatment and the right attitude, cluster headaches can be prevented in the future.

The most common headache cures involve the drinking of water and applying a cold compress to your head where the pain is located. Water helps to hydrate your body and flush out toxins. Many headaches are caused by dehydration. Most individuals aren't even aware they are dehydrated. At the first onset of a headache, make sure you drink plenty of water. Applying ice to the painful area of the head allows the inflamed areas to relax. Both of these natural remedies will help a great deal with your headache pain.

Another headache cure you can try is to press your index fingers onto your temples. Applying this simple pressure and actually massaging the area gently can provide a great amount of relief. Squeezing the bridge of your nose can also provide this same type of relief. This is due hitting certain pressure points. Headache Cures

Oh, What Pain!

You know you have a migraine headache when your head is pounding so hard that it hurts to touch, you can't stand light, and your stomach is queasy and upset. A migraine headache is one of the worst types of headaches people can get. They can cause missed days at work, depression, and a general sense of despair. If you suffer from them, or you think you suffer from them, you know that they are more than just some discomfort and a little inconvenience. With medical advances, there is no reason that you should continue to suffer from even occasional migraines. There are effective treatment methods that will bring you long-lasting and quick relief.

Be Aware Of The Symptoms

If you are not sure if what you are dealing with is a migraine headache or not, you should make yourself aware of the symptoms and get help if you need it. One of the key indicators of migraines is that you have nausea caused by the headache-also, a sensitivity to light. If you are experiencing frequent headaches accompanied by these symptoms you should talk to your doctor.

Create A Headache Journal

There are things that you can do that will help to prevent a migraine headache, but you have to understand what your "triggers" are. Keep a journal of everything that you eat, drink, and do and note when you get a migraine. If you notice a certain pattern of foods or activities that seem to happen before you get the migraine headache you may have found one of your triggers and you can find ways to possibly avoid it.

When you visit your doctor take your "headache journal." This will help your doctor to make a better evaluation of what is going on with you and your migraine headache. Your doctor can then prescribe one of the may pain killers on the market today that are designed specifically for migraines. Doctors today realize that this type of headache is not something that you have control over, or that you are causing through worry or other emotional issues. A migraine headache is a biological disorder of the brain and it can be treated. Although sometimes they are triggered by stress, many people who suffer from stress do not suffer from migraines, and on the other hand, people who sometimes suffer from a migraine headache are not necessarily suffering from stress. This is one reason why it is important to keep a migraine headache journal-you can pin down more accurately what brings on your headaches and try to eliminate that factor.

Holistic Medicine

For those who are interested in a more holistic approach to medicine, there is an herbal treatment that has been used on the migraine headache called Petadolex. It contains an herb called Butterbur which has been used since medieval times to treat fever, plague, allergies, headaches, coughs and asthma. The compounds in the herb help to prevent inflammation of the blood vessels which is one of the causes of headaches, including migraines. Petadolex can probably be found at your local nutrition or herbal supplement store.

The key to getting rid of migraines is to seek out treatment. They will not go away on their own. You need to get help and you will be glad you did.

Migraine Headache -- Causes And Cures

Headache

The cluster headache has two main characteristics. First, the cluster headache is extremely painful. The pain is so intense that some sufferers even feel that the condition is life threatening, which it is not. The second characteristic is the cyclical nature of the cluster headache. They tend to come a certain times and then last for several weeks or months and then disappear, sometimes for years, only to return again. So, before seeking cluster headache treatment, be sure that it is indeed what you are suffering from.

The best cluster headache treatment available is abortive oxygen treatment. The patient inhales pure oxygen through a mask for several minutes until the pain is gone. This treatment is very successful for many sufferers. Often, through oxygen inhalation the pain will be gone after just a few minutes. For others the relief may only be temporary and return after the sufferer stops inhaling the oxygen.

The only problem with the use of oxygen in cluster headache treatment is the inconvenience. Oxygen tanks are bulky, heavy and difficult to carry around with you. Many people are able to have them in their home in preparation for the onset of an attack. However, attacks may come when driving or while at work. Unless you purchase apparatus for home, car and work, then oxygen cluster headache treatment may not be always be available to you.

There are also some pharmaceutical options for cluster headache treatment. Imitrex (sumatriptan) is an injection that is often used to treat migraine headaches but has also been found to be effective with cluster headaches. Imitrex has side effects that the sufferer will want to consider together with their doctor before using this option.

There is also an IV drug that can be used for cluster headache treatment. It's called dihydroergotamine and requires the sufferer to go to the doctor's office to have the drug administered intravenously. This headache remedy is likewise very inconvenient because it requires a visit to the doctor's office.

Consider the Cause of Your Headaches

Remember that even though we must depend on doctors to help us with cluster headache treatment, they aren't always successful at diagnosing illnesses. What may have all the symptoms of a cluster headache may in fact be something entirely different. For example, some foods cause headaches in some people. If you eat these foods occasionally, then the headaches they cause you may behave like cluster headaches, coming and going in episodes. Or, some foods may cause you headaches only some of the time. Since the pain would come in episodes the headaches would appear to be of the cluster variety.

If you are diagnosed with having cluster headaches, you should listen to your doctor, however don't give up experimenting with your diet to see if some foods may actually be the cause. Or, if something you are eating is not causing the headaches, it could be making them more painful.

Finally, are you out of shape and don't eat healthily? Even though exercise and diet are not scientifically established causes of cluster headaches, I would definitely consider exercising more and eating better if I was consistently in a lot of pain. It is my sneaking suspicion that a lot of ailments are the result of a poor lifestyle and not just inevitable and unlucky occurrences we have no control over.
